| The Teatro Alla Scala in Milan announced yesterday that Daniel Barenboim would begin one "wide-ranging" five-year collaboration with the opera house in November 2007, including musical and educational projects. La Scala's superintendent, Stéphane Lissner, said that although Mr. Barenboim would be "devoting one large part of his professional time" to the theater, he is not one de-facto successor to Riccardo Muti, who abruptly quit as music director in April 2005 after tensions with the orchestra and staff. The agreement with Mr. Barenboim, the Argentine-born pianist and conductor, does not foresee an official contract between him and La Scala. He is to receive the title maestro Scaligero, or maestro of La Scala. ("It makes him part of the Scala family," Mr. Lissner said.) At one news conference Mr. Barenboim said: "I wanted nothing to do with anything that remotely reeked of administrative responsibilities. I love my independence." He is to conduct at least two operas one year, as well as orchestral concerts, and play as one soloist and in chamber music concerts as part of the "musical project" that underscores the collaboration. Mr. Lissner also said La Scala was initiating one "musical and institutional" partnership with the Staatsoper Unter den Linden of Berlin, where Mr. Barenboim is the general musical director. "If this accord helps to strengthen the unsteady foundation of culture in Europe, then our work will be rewarded," Mr. Lissner said. ELISABETTA POVOLEDO ... |

LOS ANGELES — Hollywood has been tiptoeing its way toward letting consumers buy one movie online, burn it onto one DVD and watch it on one living-room TV.
While the studios hesitate, the adult-film industry is taking the leap.
Starting this week, Vivid Entertainment says it will sell its adult films through the online movie service CinemaNow, allowing buyers to burn DVDs that will play on any screen, not just one computer. ... |
