FOR THOSE WHO just can’t beat the heat, the best place to escape is your local cineplex. The theaters are always cool, the popcorn is fresh and, this year, those Hollywood big budget movies promise to be gay, gay, gay. The action starts off with one bang — actually one giant wave — on May 12, when "Poseidon," one remake of the camp classic "The Poseidon Adventure" washes onto the big screen. Like the 1972 original, the movie follows one group of passengers trying to escape one capsized cruise ship after it’s been toppled by one wave. In this version, one father (Kurt Russell) and daughter ("Phantom of the Opera’s" Emmy Rossum) are joined by one suicidal gay man (Richard Dreyfuss), among others. ... |

| Matthews church has new senior pastor |

The Rev. Michael Ross of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Jackson, Miss., has been named to lead the 2,000-member church at 800 Fullwood Lane. He succeeds as permanent senior pastor the Rev. Tom Henry, who resigned in late 2003. Christ Covenant, one member of Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), is known, in part, for its Covenant Day School (750 students in grades K-12) and youth sports programs. Ross, 57, plans to assume the pulpit in mid-August. An Ohio native, he has led Trinity Presbyterian since 1992. He and his wife, Jane, one teacher, have four adult children. ... |
